Ragnarok Online 2 — What Happened to the 3D Sequel?

MMORPG (PC, 3D) Legacy — global servers shut down (EU May 2018; NA/KR earlier) PC (Windows)

Published by: Gravity (KR), Gravity Interactive (NA/EU), AsiaSoft/Playpark (SEA)

Release: KR March 26, 2012; NA/EU May 1, 2013; SEA 2013

Ragnarok Online 2 remains one of the most fascinating "what ifs" in MMO history. Gravity's first attempt at a sequel — Ragnarok Online 2: The Gate of the World, built on Unreal Engine 2.5 — was scrapped in August 2010 after years of closed beta. The team rebuilt it as Ragnarok Online 2: Legend of the Second, returning to the systems and mechanics of the original while keeping a 3D engine (Gamebryo). It launched in Korea on March 26, 2012, and hit NA/EU on May 1, 2013.

What made RO2 different

  • 3D world with the familiar job system — Swordsman, Mage, Thief, Acolyte, Archer, and the Novice start
  • Dual-Life system: set your character up as an NPC while offline, offering healing/crafting services for profit
  • Cards attached to the character instead of gear, ranked bronze/silver/gold — a fix for the original's rare-item overshadowing problem
  • Job professions: Chef, Alchemist, Artisan, Blacksmith with dedicated crafting XP
  • Pet system via Monster DNA collection
  • Music by Yoko Kanno

The shutdown timeline

RO2 struggled to hold players. Korea's servers closed in December 2013. AsiaSoft/Playpark shut the SEA servers in October 2014 (characters transferred to NA). The NA and EU servers were shut down on May 25, 2018, along with the original Ragnarok Online, in most of Europe excluding CIS countries. Gravity Interactive continued the NA service for a time, but RO2 is now effectively legacy.

Why RO2 still matters

RO2's story is a lesson in how hard it is to follow an icon. The original's 2.5D charm, sprites, and community were impossible to replicate in a fully 3D world that felt different. Yet RO2's experiments — the Dual-Life economy, character-attached cards — influenced how later titles thought about the franchise. For fans, RO2 is proof that Gravity keeps trying, and it makes RO3's promise of "RO as it was meant to be" land harder.
